For nearly seven years, Valerii Matiushenko endured the unimaginable—imprisoned in russian-controlled Donetsk for his unwavering support of Ukraine. His story is one of resilience, suffering, and the relentless fight for justice.

A Prisoner for His Beliefs

Matiushenko was seized in July 2017 and subjected to brutal torture in the infamous Izolyatsia prison, a secret detention facility in occupied Donetsk. His crime? Holding pro-Ukrainian views. The conditions of his captivity were dire—beatings, electric shocks, mock executions, and psychological torment. His health deteriorated rapidly, exacerbated by conditions of detention and lack of treatment.

Despite international outcry, russia refused to release him, even as Ukraine negotiated prisoner exchanges. His wife, Tetiana, fought tirelessly for his freedom, but for years, her pleas went unanswered.

Freedom at Last

In June 2024, after nearly seven years of unjust imprisonment, Valerii Matiushenko was finally released as part of a prisoner exchange facilitated by Ukraine. His release was a moment of triumph for his family and all those who had fought tirelessly for his freedom. It also underscored the importance of international solidarity in addressing human rights abuses.

Our humanitarian organization provided individual material support to Mr. Matiushenko in his rehabilitation and recovery. 

Turning Pain into Purpose

Now, as a free man, Valerii has channeled his harrowing experiences into meaningful work. He cooperates with Angels for Ukraine, offering invaluable insights to help draft initiatives aimed at supporting individuals who have endured russian captivity. His firsthand experience allows him to better understand the unique challenges faced by former prisoners and to advocate for targeted assistance programs.

Valerii focuses on creating pathways for these individuals to rebuild their lives, regain their sense of freedom, and embrace opportunities for a fulfilling future. His resilience not only inspires those around him but also ensures that survivors of captivity receive effective support tailored to their needs.
