Ukrainian Society Must Become Veteran‑Inclusive

Since the start of the full‑scale invasion, Ukrainians have been living through profoundly different experiences. Combat deployment, loss, displacement, loneliness, support from the home front, and the difficult transition back to civilian life — all of these realities coexist, yet they are not always understood or acknowledged. When these experiences remain disconnected, tension inevitably grows within society. The question of understanding between service members, veterans, and civilians becomes not only an emotional challenge, but a structural one.

A veteran‑inclusive society is one in which institutions, communities, and educational environments intentionally recognize veterans’ experiences when shaping decisions, policies, and everyday practices — from psychological support and social reintegration to meaningful participation in public life.

These topics were at the center of a recent joint event organized by the Psychological Service of the 12th Brigade “Azov” and the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE). Angels for Ukraine was invited as an expert participant, represented by the President of our Foundation, Vladyslav Shelokov.

During the discussion, participants reviewed existing reintegration practices, explored their limitations, and emphasized the importance of sharing expertise and scaling the solutions that work. In group sessions, attendees identified key challenges faced by veterans and outlined practical steps for coordinated action moving forward.

At Angels for Ukraine, we remain committed to building a society where every veteran — regardless of their path — receives the understanding, dignity, and support they deserve.
