Statement from Angels for Ukraine Foundation

Angels for Ukraine Charity Foundation condemns the brutal attack on the Derzhprom building in Kharkiv on October 28, 2024. This is not just an attack on civilian business centers but also an attempt to destroy the symbol of the Kharkiv architectural masterpiece, which has been under provisional enhanced UNESCO protection since 2022.

The Derzhprom building in Kharkiv, where our foundation’s first office has been for more than two years, is a masterpiece of constructivist architecture and a symbol of Ukraine’s innovative spirit. It holds immense historical and cultural significance not just for our city but for world architectural heritage.

Completed in 1928, the Derzhprom (State Industry Building) was Europe’s first skyscraper built of reinforced concrete and remains one of the most prominent examples of constructivist architecture worldwide. This architectural monument was revolutionary for its time, featuring a complex system of skywalks connecting its towers and an advanced engineering design that influenced modernist architecture globally.

At the time of its construction, it was the largest building in Europe, showcasing Ukraine’s technological advancement and architectural prowess. The building complex consists of three interconnected blocks ranging from 7 to 13 stories, creating a distinctive silhouette on Kharkiv’s Freedom Square. Its innovative design emphasized functionality, with features like express elevators and advanced ventilation systems that were ahead of their time.

Beyond its architectural significance, Derzhprom represents the cultural heart of Kharkiv. For nearly a century, it has stood as a testament to Ukrainian resilience and creativity, serving as both a government administrative center and a beloved landmark that has inspired generations of architects and artists.

The Derzhprom building is not merely a structure of concrete and steel – it is a vital piece of Ukrainian heritage that tells the story of our nation’s commitment to progress and innovation. Any attack on such a significant historical monument represents an assault not only on Ukraine’s cultural heritage but on the shared architectural history of humanity.

We call on the international community to recognize the vital importance of protecting cultural landmarks that represent our shared human heritage from russian aggression and to support efforts to preserve these irreplaceable monuments for future generations.
