Schoolbag as a symbol of hope and resilience
In the midst of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, education stands as a beacon of hope and normalcy for children whose lives have been upended by war. For the young people in war-affected regions of Ukraine, access to basic educational materials like schoolbags and other supplies is not just about learning – it’s about preserving childhood, fostering resilience, and building a foundation for the future.
Since the onset of the tragic war in Ukraine, hundreds of thousands of children have been displaced, with many facing disruptions to their education. Schools have been damaged or repurposed, and families have been forced to prioritize immediate survival needs over educational materials.
Our foundation opened its Childhood in War programme in 2023 to support Ukrainian children and their families during wartime. Following the programme’s priorities, just before the start of the new school year, we provided 64 children from Kostiantynivka with schoolbags equipped for education.
Why is assisting children in education an important cause for us?
A schoolbag filled with books, pencils, and notebooks represents more than just tools for learning. It’s a symbol of routine and stability in an otherwise chaotic environment.
So, engaging in educational activities provides children with a sense of purpose and can help mitigate the psychological impacts of war and displacement. Despite the challenges, education must continue. Having the right supplies ensures that children can participate in learning activities, whether in formal school settings or makeshift classrooms.
Angels for Ukraine supports children’s access to education, which is crucial for Ukraine’s long-term recovery and development. By supporting children’s education now, we’re investing in the country’s future leaders, thinkers, and rebuilders.
Providing targeted assistance to the children helps level the playing field, ensuring that economic disparities exacerbated by war don’t further disadvantage some students.
What’s in the Schoolbag?
In addition to the schoolbag, our volunteers prepared for every child:
- Textbooks and workbooks
- Writing materials (pens, pencils, erasers)
- Notebooks
- Art supplies
As we witness the resilience of Ukrainian children and families in the face of war, we must remember that education is not a luxury – it’s a lifeline. By ensuring that these children have the tools they need to learn, we’re not just filling schoolbags; we’re filling young minds with knowledge, hope, and the power to shape a better future for Ukraine.
