Millions Uprooted: Why Ukraine’s IDPs Need Us Now

Ukraine is facing one of the largest internal displacement crises in Europe, with over 4.6 million people registered as internally displaced persons (IDPs as of November 2025. Supporting them is not just urgent—it is essential for the country’s resilience and recovery.

The Scale of Displacement

Nearly 4.6 million Ukrainians have been forced to leave their homes due to ongoing war and destruction.

Of these, 2.7 million are women and 837,600 are children under 18, highlighting the vulnerability of families and young people.

The largest concentrations of IDPs are in Dnipropetrovsk (557,000), Kharkiv, and Kyiv, regions already under immense pressure to provide housing, jobs, and social services.

Why Support Is Critical
  • Basic needs remain unmet: Many displaced families struggle with access to stable housing, healthcare, and education.
  • Economic strain: IDPs often arrive with few resources, placing additional burdens on host communities.
  • Psychological impact: The trauma of war and displacement leaves lasting scars, especially on children.
  • Social cohesion: Without adequate support, displaced populations risk marginalization, which can weaken national unity.
The Human Face of Displacement

Behind the statistics are millions of personal stories—families torn apart, children growing up far from their homes, elderly people forced to rebuild their lives in unfamiliar cities. Each displaced person represents both a tragedy and a chance for Ukraine to demonstrate solidarity and compassion.

A Call to Action

In response to the diverse needs of internally displaced persons, this month, Angels for Ukraine, through local communities and volunteer initiatives, distributes hygiene items in Kharkivska (including Kharkiv City), Chernihivska, Sumska, and Lvivska Oblasts.

Ukraine’s displaced population is not just a statistic—it is a test of our humanity. By supporting IDPs, we strengthen the fabric of Ukrainian society and uphold the values of solidarity and resilience. Every contribution, whether financial, material, or volunteer time, makes a tangible difference in the lives of those who have lost everything.

Angels for Ukraine calls on partners, donors, and communities worldwide to stand with Ukraine’s displaced families. Together, we can transform displacement into hope and rebuild lives with compassion.
